Mezzo-Soprano Milette Gillow is currently studying for a master’s in vocal performance at the Royal Academy of Music under tutelage of Alex Ashworth, following a Ph.D. in maths from the University of Leeds.
Her operatic experience includes Fairy/Mustardseed cover (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Royal Academy Opera), Sorceress (Dido and Aeneas, LUU Opera Society), Lola (Cavalleria Rusticana, West Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra), and Sally (A Hand of Bridge, Wolfson College Oxford), and she has performed extensively in scenes as Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia, RAM Scenes), Nero (L’incoronazione di Poppea, Harrow Opera), Catherine (The Women of Whitechapel, Oxenfoord International Summer School), Mrs. Ford (Sir John in Love, Oxenfoord International Summer School), and Suzuki (Madama Butterfly, University of Leeds). She was awarded “Highly Commended” at the RAM Isabel Jay Competition 2020.
An experienced oratorio soloist, Milette has performed among other things in Handel’s Messiah, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Haydn’s Paukenmesse, and Mozart’s Requiem, as well as performing in the RAM Bach Cantata Series 2020 lead by Iain Ledingham. As a recitalist, she holds a particular fondness for 20th Century English Song, and was awarded “Very Highly Commended” in the RAM Michael Head Competition 2020.
Milette is also a keen conductor, having directed both the Chamber Choir and the unauditioned Symphonic Choir at the University of Leeds. While in Leeds she studied conducting with Eduardo Portal and received coaching from Andrea Brown, Alice Farnham, and Oliver Rundell. She was one of eight scholars in the National Youth Choir of Great Britain’s Fellowship Scheme 2019-2020.
